Dr. K Rathnam
K Rathnam is Managing Director (CEO) of Amul Dairy. He started his career as a lecturer with the University College and joined Amul 1995 as Deputy Manager (Product Development). He has been instrumental in setting up quality systems and introduced the ISO certification for dairy as well as Village Cooperatives affiliated to Amul.
During his tenure as General Manager (Operations), he planned and executed various projects like India’s first automatic paneer (cottage cheese) plant at Khatraj, paneer plant, integrated whey drying powder plant, and recently the most modern dairy plant at Virar, Maharashtra with a capacity to process 1 million litres of milk per day with robotic packing along with ice cream manufacturing facilities.
Rathnam is very keen to work for the progress of farmers. This is the reason he re-joined Amul after a short stint at a multinational company. He is optimistic about the future of cooperatives in India and plans to put forth focussed efforts to expand the horizons of milk procurement to other states in India to develop dairying under Amul Pattern, while maximising the benefits which would result in increased livelihood for poor and marginal farmers.
He is a member of the Board of Tribhuvandas Foundation, an associate NGO which provides health care program for farmer members affiliated to Amul. He is a Board Member of Vidya Dairy under Anand Agriculture University established for the training of Dairy Science Students. He is a firm believer of the Amul cooperative business model which propagates empowerment of farmers to ensure their overall development and progress.
Rathnam holds a Doctorate in Food & Nutrition from Sardar Patel University, Gujarat.Back to Speakers / Panellists »
